Important: this kit requires advanced DIY audio construction techniques including chassis layout and sheetmetal work, soldering, and audio and AC mains wiring, all of which can potentially be dangerous (or even lethal).  If you are at all uncomfortable with any of the above, then this kit is not for you.  If, on the other hand, you can drill and punch aluminum chasses, safely wire AC power sockets and perform delicate soldering work, then you'll find this kit refreshingly easy to make into a world-class phono preamp!

Our products are NOT UL listed nor RoHS compliant!  Use at your own risk!

Chassis, tubes, connectors, and wire not included!

Build Example # 1

Dr. Tritschler's personal prototype, used by his loudspeaker-expert father Tony Tritschler:

Although the LMB "Crown Royal" chasses are cute and inexpensive, we DO NOT recommend trying to squeeze the preamp and power supply into the 10"x4"x2.5" and 4"x4"x2" boxes as shown, as quite a bit of finagling was required to make the boards fit.  The power supply umbilical uses a four-pin mike connector of the type used with CB radios; probably not rated for the 250V supply voltage, but has worked fine for many years.  The NOS RCA 6DJ8's (West German manufacture, probably Siemens or Telefunken) sound excellent.

Build Example # 2

Preamp used by Vinnie Ferguson, noted east-coast record collector and archivist who has worked for George Blood Audio and is a former Audio Collections Specialist for the Chester County Historical Society.  Preamp is affectionately known as "The Black Beast."

This preamp was built inside the recycled chassis of a decommissioned laser from a physics laboratory.  Note the input and output jacks, which are mounted directly to the PC boards with cable access holes punched in the top and sides of the chassis cover; an excellent idea if you don't mind the aesthetics.  Also note the integral power supply.  We recommend a separate power supply chassis for minimum hum, but this build proves that a single unit can work; it's reportedly very quiet with a moving-magnet cartridge.  Note the 4" of separation between the rear signal PC board and power supply board.  Vinnie reports excellent sound with relatively inexpensive Sovtek 6DJ8's.  Whichever tubes you use, we recommend noise-screened matched pairs if available.
